The
Averno was identified with the hell. Strabone gives
it a dark and mysterious look and he described it
surrounded by thick and shady woods (that is to
say the deep dark blue of the water) and the unhealthy
exalations - that they told they caused the flying
birds' death.
This lake caused a kind of superstitious terror:
Strabone tells no one dared to drink the water coming
from a source close to the lake; they thought any
source was in communication with the hell river
called Stige.
The presence of deads oracle gives more strenght
to this alarming scene. This oracle was consulted
by pilgrims guided by the priests after offering
blood sacrifices and prayed the hell gods .
